Tell us a bit about yourself:
Hey what’s up I’m Miss Gabrielle, a DJ/Producer from Naarm (Melbourne) I enjoy playing a range of house, tech & latin genres and getting cheeky and saucy in the mix, I love connecting with and supporting others in the electronic music community.
How did you get into DJing?
I first went to Ibiza in 2007 and the magic of sounds blew my mind. One of the closing parties I said to my best friend I wanna do this, I wanna learn to Dj, this is where I wanna be, and she suggested I ask her sister to teach me. I did this as soon as I got home, practiced my heart out on her mostly trance vinyl til I could get myself set up and get my own gear and get my own records and get it going. I’ve never looked back!
What DJs have had the most influence on you?
DJs who have really influenced me:1. Lindy Layton was the DJ at a Pub I worked at in London the same year I got inspired to learn DJing. She always seemed so relaxed and happy, her tracks so diverse and fun. I think she was a mum, as I recall it she’d wear high heels, drink a red wine, some big hot guy or other would carry in her records. To me she just had a spunk and confidence about her, she was always grooving. I didn’t know her well but I just dug her vibe every time, and she was super friendly. It was months before I realised she was the singer of the Beats International version of Dub Be Good To Me, a track I’d always adored. Absolute boss of a chick and artist. Big ups!2. Jeff Mills, what can I say? From seeing him in a tiny sweaty dancefloor in London in which he DJed in a booth in the centre and seemed so sweet, shy and humble when I thanked him at the end, despite having just displayed pure wizardry beyond comparison, to seeing him play with Melbourne Symphony Orchestra at The Sidney Myer Music Bowl, it is truly hard to find comparison to this artist. A pioneer and a legend. No doubts.3. The Martinez Brothers!! I just can’t watch these guys without smiling, I love their interpretation of house, their proud latin flavour, the bliss and joy they seem to take in life and in the booth. They just have the magic, don’t they!? I hope to always have as much fun as they look like they’re having when I work too. Vamos!
You’re being put to death, but you can listen to one last track before you die. What track do you choose?
Totó La Momposina – El Pescador (for you pure dance heads the song that was sampled in La Mezcla, Michel Cleis)
What’s your favourite thing about Ibiza?
The feeling that you’re in the warmth of a sun which heals you, that you’re in the Mecca of electronic music, that people from all around the world have also chased that same beat, that same dream, that same euphoria that you have, and here in the beauty of this nature, you hear the freshest most magical underground sounds that can ever be found.
What’s the easiest thing about being a DJ?
Feeling so lucky about your job!
And what’s the hardest thing about being a DJ?
It’s an energy rollercoaster, it’s a big challenge in balance, it can be a battle within yourself at times, but it’s so magic, it’s always worth it.
Best thing about Dance Music culture right now?
I love the fluidity and inspiration across genres! That’s not new of course but I do feel like right now people are more inspired than ever about crossing genres, pulling Baile Funk into pop, Afrobeat into techno, Reggaeton into house, Dance into Hip Hop, RnB into Minimal.. you get my drift!
Worst thing about Dance Music culture right now?
I think it’s so great to increase people’s access to electronic music online if they can’t be there, but at the same time, often everyone on their phones recording instead of loosing themselves in the moment can make me a bit sad.. close your eyes and feel the magic!
Why should listeners vote for you?
I think I’m at the perfect point in my career and my character where I could absolutely bring it- people watching my set feel the euphoria and excellence of none less than the closing party of Pacha Ibiza! Yet I’m still small and would actually be OUT OF MY MIND with excitement about this opportunity. So vote for me and let me bring that excitement back to YOU! Nos Vemos en Pacha!!
